Fundamentals
What is VO₂ max?
VO₂ max is your aerobic “ceiling”: the highest rate your body can use oxygen when exercise intensity is very high.
In practice, coaches and athletes use VO₂ max (often written VO2 max) as one marker of cardiorespiratory fitness. It is commonly reported in ml/kg/min so people of different body sizes can be compared more fairly.
Three sentences you can remember
- Oxygen delivery and use limit how hard you can go aerobically.
- A field test estimates that ceiling from distance, time, or heart rate.
- Lab gas analysis is more precise; field numbers are for training feedback.
Why it matters (without overselling)
Endurance sports reward a strong aerobic engine. Improving VO₂ max can help, but it is not the only lever — running economy, lactate threshold, durability, and skill often matter as much.
Field estimate vs laboratory test
A metabolic cart measures inspired and expired gases while you exercise to exhaustion. Apps and formulas reverse-engineer an estimate from performance or resting HR. Both can be useful; only one is a direct gas measurement.
